This Oscar-winning 8-minute effort from the animator (Deitch) and writer (Jules Feiffer) who would put the lid on the Tom & Jerry and Popeye figures respectively(!) details the vicissitudes of a 4 year-old boy who is unaccountably drafted and drilled into combat duty – in spite of his genuine protestations to the anomaly of the situation!

Gene Deitch was a director from the 50s and 60s that was famous for making cartoons cheaper--cheaper to make and incredibly cheap in quality. With UPA studios (Columbia Pictures) and MGM he made the studio very successful by making cartoons that frankly were horrid.

As of this month, we have lost animation legend Gene Deitch, known for embracing abstract animation and design from the 60s onward that heavily utilized minimalism and stylization to their finest. From his charming early television series Tom Terrific, to his disastrously fascinating Tom & Jerry cartoons and his own illustrative adaptations of children's books, the man helped carry on the legacy of minimal animation that UPA left on the world.
