I'm normally a big fan of Faulks' writing but I was a bit underwhelmed by this novel-perhaps because I sway far more towards historical fiction, and I didn't feel that Faulks' great level of description meshed as well with the contemporary setting.
I felt reviewers were right to call this novel Dickensian, because it tells the story of several characters, all of them caricatures of the inhabitants of contemporary London. They're not meant to be real fleshed-out people - they are vehicles for the author to make commentary on the state of the nation.
Meh. This should have been much better than it was.
