The Book of Amman was one of the best books that I have read in a long time. The detail and depth of the book was outstanding to where I could not put down the book for any given moment.

I really enjoyed this novel about a handful of young women in Amman, Jordan, all of whom faced pressure to marry before it's too late. What surprised me wasn't what each of these women experienced, but rather how much their culture reminded me of Chinese culture.

The universal themes of seeking love and happiness come through, with all the extra problems and hardships that the young residents of Jordan must deal with as they come of age in a tough social climate. It's beautifully written, often understated but nevertheless powerful and poignant, and I was surprised to see that it was written by a man, as he really manages to get under the skin of his female protagonists and the complicated lives they are forced to live.
